As much as I love Dell's, if you are going to carry that much weight I'd look at this one:

Gateway has a 17" model that's worth looking at. The rest of the specs should be similar to the Dell, including the price.
Hopefully Dell will make a 17" model soon.

I did a lot of research and talked to a lot of people before plunking down hard earned dough for a laptop. The conclusion: TOSHIBA. I've had mine for over a year and it is great. I cant say enough good things about it. I run all the usual supects on it as well as After Effects. Great machine, and generally reasonable too.

any laptop over 10 pounds is no longer a portable.

i'd like to put in my vote for IBM thinkpads!
i know it doesn't totally fall into spec of what you're looking for, but as far as durability goes and an EXTREMELY solid workstation, a thinkpad will kick most laptop's down the street.sidenote, if you're seriously looking at a laptop that's over 9 lbs minimum, just seriously look at a small form factor pc. 9lbs minimum isn't portable. that sucker's huge

It doesn't have to be overly portable. I just need something that I can take home in the car with me after work.
A couple of extra pounds doesn't make much difference. I Just need to be able to work at different locations and it won't be lugged on my back much.
