someone finally did it... and now those that 'did it' say the world should ban it.
can someone tell me what therapeutic cloning is?
- Vain0
It could eventually involve taking a plug of skin from a patient and using it to grow perfectly matched tissue or even organs to treat diseases ranging from diabetes to Alzheimer's.
- ribit0
They didnt say that the world should ban what they did. They only want reproductive cloning banned, not therapeutic cloning.
- abizzyman0
thanks for the correction ribit...
... i meant to say 'human cloning"
so -- they want to clone to heal...
... I just don't know how I feel about that... it's so sci-fi.
- ribit0
Ultimately their goal is just to create usable tissue/organs... Cloning is just the only way to do that right now.
Maybe they will eventually find a way to do this wiothout going through the embryo stage?
- abizzyman0
if you go through the embryo stage... then YOU ARE CLONING... right?
you're basically creating a pre-born baby - and killing it so someone can have the cells to grow a liver.
seriously... correct me if I'm wrong - I'm reading up on this like crazy -- my above statement is only a question.

It's the future. How else do we live forever?
- Mimio0
Reality is always far more terrifying/exciting than Science Fiction.
- abizzyman0
i said sci-fi because it feels like that... it doesn't seem real. The steps in science in the last 20 years are incredible...
'how else would we live forever?'
... my faith is elsewhere on that.

all i can say is, Mr. Suk Hwang is lucky he doesn't live in the states...
- Mimio0
Why because Bush and his neo-con rightwing wanks believe that the body is "sacred"? Bush probably wants to have the Ten Commandments in White House Topiary.
- ribit0
There is much debate over this, but remember there are differing views, and established (and differing) laws, on whether an embryo is considered to be a 'human being', especially relating to the number of days old. So it's not something you can just assume.
Again, ultimately they want to heal people, not clone them. Hopefully we move through this stage of the science to a point where cloning (or creation of an embryo) is not involved...

it was not a cloned human being. it was a ball of stem cells when they destroyed it.
A bunch of cells a living being does not make. otherwise it would be immoral to remove cancerous tumors.
- Gorbie0
i think he meant because his name (Suk Hwang) means something else in english.
- Mimio0
Kpl, some fools believe cells are little people. That's the issue with this research not being performed in the states.
- abizzyman0
so... these little cells are not humans?
so what happens? You let the cells grow and they turn into a dog?
I don't think so. It's 'programmed' to turn into nothing else but A HUMAN. The moment that sperm hops inside the egg and conception occurs... the only thing that can be produced is a HUMAN.
'fools' as you put it are as entitled to base their 'beliefs' ON FACT if they want too. I could care less if it's considered 'right-wing' or 'left-wing'...
... the fact of the matter is that the cells will grow into a HUMAN... and nothing else. If the cells fail naturally and there's a mis-carriage - then so-be-it. That's the process of things in this imperfect world...
... but before you start calling us 'fools', - review the facts of nature and science regarding this subject.

So every time a woman has her period she's killing a potential human? Or every time a guy...well...you get the idea.
- abizzyman0
a human is created when the two come together...
... as I said earler... i'm slightly uneducated here -- and I will eat my words if a stem cell isn't the creation that occurs after a sperm and egg meet and join.
... I'M VERY UNEDUCATED HERE... but based on what I've read - a stem cell is not a sperm on it's own... or an egg on it's own... it's part of the result of conception... something that couldn't occur until after conception of the egg and the sperm.
again... if I'm wrong - then I'm sorry... but if I'm not wrong (which I think I'm not)... then I still stand by my opinion that the human is ultimately being destroyed.
- phist0
congratulations, we have officially fucked the human race.

Is in our nature to try and trancend our present state. Progress will go n without us regardless of opinion.
