3D Line Effect how?

I'm new to 3D type stuff so please understand. I would like to make some 3D lines wrap around an object (lets say a person) but I'm not sure how to create a smooth flowing line that looks 3D. That bends around things and has different thickness at the parts that bend and what not. I have Illustator 10 which I have been tring to create this effect in but looks like crap. I have used the pen tool to make a ton of objects but never something that looks 3D so either I'm missing something or I need other software. To see what I'm talking about please go here http://www.eyeballnyc.com then look at their DirectTV spot (scroll down their client list) . It has a blue/white line that goes around the soccer players and looks 3D kind of? I'm not sure but it looks really nice.
