I just got a female GSD a few months ago. She is really smart, easy to train, and a pretty good dog in general.

rescued a 6 yr old shepard/lab/husky mix...he's over 100 pounds and played football and drank beer in a former life.
Now he sits around my house and explores new ways of laying down.

When I was a kid, we had a shepherd. They're great dogs. The only problem is that its hard to find one without hip dysplasia issues.

my grandfather had a german shepard when i was a little boy. but unfortunatly it attacked me in the face and my dad killed it. i think it was a good dog other than that.

Damn, why did it attack you?

I've had two, both bitches.
They are the best dogs, and yes you do have to train them right. Shepard bitches are the most lovable loyal well behaved dogs. Super smart too.
If you're going to get one, get it from a reputable breeder and make SURE there is no history of hip dysplasia in the blood line.
REALLY make sure, my first one had it and it is so heartbreaking to watch it set in.

BTW, does anyone know when their protective instincts kick in?

Holy crap, virtu. An old roommate of mine had the same thing happen. Purebred dog, and when he went to hug it after opening an exciting xmas gift, the dog bit him in the face. Still has (minor) scars. Sued the breeders and got a TON of money.

My mother in law was at home alone once, some drunk idiot came into the basement, and the shepherd lept past her and gave the guy a pretty decent bite on the calf. He ran off pretty quick.
Stupid guy, shes a pretty scary dog when shes barking and coming at you. Really protective dogs, but not at all out of line of well trained.

yeah, i didnt get to sue anyone, since it was my grandfathers dog. I dont really know what i did to piss it off, it just started attacking me and then my dad fucked it up. I guess instead of getting money, i just got to watch my grandfather bury his dead dog with fresh stiches in my face. I actually only have 1 small scar from the whole incident, i can be thankful for that.

my shepard has hip dysplasia
:(
i have to give him glucosamine supliments to lube up his joints.
im afraid to get him surgery. ive read horrror stories of how docs can fuck it up even worse
