Anyone been there? Or Durban? I'm off to meet the gal's mum and after reading travel advice I'm worried... Sounds pretty dangerous.

I have been there many times. I lived in Africa for over 4 years. Mostly SWA (Namibia) but have been to Joburg quite often. It's beautiful, however, there is a lot of crime so beware. Outside of JoBurg in Sandton there are a ton of tech jobs and it's quite a nice place to live. Affordable and pretty and nice people. Durban is also fun, but a costal city so it's completely different. has a large population of Indian-blooded people, who actually speak more Afrikaans and English than any indigenous Indian language. etc, if you want more info I can spit it out. I love Africa.

that's scary shit, don't mess with that stuff. I really have enjoyed an area called 'Florida' there. No big deal. People are not be executed it's just a bit on the dangerous side. Go to Cape Town area, much cooler and sweet design scene. Also close to my beloved Namibia.

My G/F was born there so I'm sure she knows what to avoid. We're basically renting a place on the coast, north Durban for the most part. Just sun and sea and food!It worries me a little, because friends of the family were car-jacked out there. Not only that, but shot dead...

yep, exactly many, live it up, The surf and weather in Durban is excellent. You will get a nice taste of authentic African food with a bit of curry mixed in from the Indian/'Coloured' (mixed people) side of things. Wow, I'm so jealous I could die. If you get a chance drive up and down the coast heading West toward the Garden Route towards the Vynyards on the Western Kaap. :)

BTW, there are some HOT women in that place, GOD I tell you, your gonna' see some and die. Also, watch out for Sharks there are a lot of bites in those waters. :(

Well. That was an interesting trip. Took a trip into Soweto.... that opened my eyes I can tell ya!
It's a lovely country.. but I couldn't live in fear like that. The houses are like prisons...... no thanks.
Maybe I'll see the Cape next year... might change my view.
It's kinda nice to be back I have to say. Public Transport. I'll never dis it again...
