"Another dangerous practice is ripping CDs. In this sense, ripping means transferring songs from a CD (or vinyl, or tape) onto your hard drive in the form of MP3 files, so that you can listen to the music on your computer. Unfortunately, it is not legal to make copies of songs from CDs, even if you own the CD, unless you have a licence to do so from the copyright owner. Whilst this may be possible in some other countries, it is not so in Australia. Don't transfer music from CD to your HDD."
I only just realised this...

doesn't it also depends in what country you live? some countries have different laws regarding this issue.
anyways, i thought you were always allowed to make backups from cds (as well as dvds, ps2 games etc) without having a written permission.

despite the illegalness of the situation every one will continue to rip cd's, just as people still drive fast on highways.
