i think it´s quite good
just give the pages more white,
means more space between the images and typo.you don´t have to optimize for 800x600, only 4% of my visitors use it.
and drop the image borders.

the spacing could probably use a little tweaking; you're right. and i go back and forth on the image borders...i originally had the images borderless and just felt like the page felt a little boring. nothing was popping. but i'll toy with it some more, maybe a solution eludes me right now.
800x600 is a (bad?) habit. at some point i plan to get over it. my personal site is still optimized for 640x480. :
