now when i start up the computer (windows xp) i get as far as the logo then the screen blinks off and says out of range! i cant change it back becase i cant see to login and navigate the machine! i used another monitor i have in the house with no joy :.(
can anyone help! i tryed change'n it in safe mode but on restart it was the same!

go back into safe mode, unistall your graphics card driver and it should reset it back to 640x480.. reinstall driver again*..
should work.. i am currently looking for a reg file to do this..
*it may remember the old settings :(

Do you have 'System restore' turned on??
//
if so
//
Boot in safe mode (Hold F7 on start up, to enter startup)Click on Start menu>Programs>accessories>System tools>system restore
follow on screen information..
//
if that doesn't work do bellow
//Hold F7 on start up, to enter startup.
Then unistall your graphics card drivers.
Reboot.
Your new display will use XP generic drivers at 640x480.
Then change the resolution to 800x600.
Reboot.
Install old graphic card drivers.
It should be fine.

what res did you try setting too?

i did that once.
find another pc.. and memorize the key presses to change the res back..
like, right click, tab tab tab enter tab tab tab left left enter enter
lol i did that once and it worked for me

holding down F8 when restarting works... choose safe mode and when windows is running, change settings back. If you don't know what your setings were then just put 1024x768 with 60 hz. Then restart it again and don't hold F8 down... should work... worked for me anyway...
Only problem might be when you have USB keyboard... then your keys are not connected until Windows loads and therefore you can't press F8 :( You have to find PS2 port keyboard then

FANTASTIC! got it fixed, i pressed (F4) on start up
(F8 brings up the boot menu, eg floppy or CD)I was able to use the system restore, dare i say the first useful feature on windows!!!
thanks for all the suggestions.
