You're only as good as your current client.... at the end of the day you create the work but the client is the final filter, a portfolio full of 'personal projects' is pretty meaningless. The problem alot of the time is the duality of satisfying the both client and yourself... I've done work that's been gradually reduced from a good concept and design to a total mess by the client. You take the money, or reject the job...

I haven't read the thread but no, thats bollocks, you're only as good as the briefs you get and the clients you work with.
I wont take responsibilty for the shitty changes lame (wannabe designers) clients force me to make.

Good design isn't really that subjective. Aesthetics are subjective - good design is fairly objective. A design can be fundamentally bad, whilst looking good
And no, you're only as good as your best desin, not your last design. There are a lot of variables - tinmescale, budgets, blah blah
