i would give my social but i never emailed it, hand delivered or mailed the invoice with my Social.
they need it in order to set up 1099 forms for you, so you can claim what you made. don't mess with the DA MAN, he'll get ya no matter what, that fat bastard.
also keep in mind that the first 600 you make is in pocket, you don't have to claim anything if you don't exceed that amount. and that's per client.

i only had one client asking for my ssn last year, and like a gump, i gave it to him. It was only a $300 project. What happens if i don't file that?

Yes, for taxes.
How could you do freelance and not file the forms for your income? Not saying you have, though.
And cheers to anyone getting paid under the table.

if you are a freelance contractor - you claim your own taxes - he probably thinks that he "hired" you for a brief period and let you go, in which case you would have to be on a payroll for him to deduct taxes. if it is a one-time payment for x amount of dollars - YOU get 100% full greenback and YOU have to claim those on taxes. then HE has to claim the money he spent as an expense on HIS taxes to get his taxes back.
in shorter words: don't give him your SSN

Wait till you get a client that pays you up front!
It's a real mind-fuck! Makes you think "Why can't everyone do this?"

They need your SSN for tax purposes.

Maybe to file tax that he paid you.

I just wouldn't put my SSN on there. What does he need that for?

need an invoice. Please email it to me, including your name, address, SSN."
