I am looking at getting a powerbook 15 inch and recently did a comparison between prices in the UK and the US.
For the exact same spec, the US price comes in nearly £750 cheaper. The bonus is that my girlfriend flies alot for work so I do have the opportunity to get over to New York and get one for the price of a plane ticket, which is around £300. Which in the end means, I get a new powerbook, a great trip to New York (staying in her plush hotel) for a few days, with a saving over over £400.
Can any NY peeople enlighten me here. Is there an apple store in NY and would it be possible for me to walk in and pretty much pick one up straight away.without having to wait for build time and testing, etc.
Are there any difference between the US and the UK versions of the powerbook that I need to be aware of?
Cheers all. for not making this a mac vs PC thread

Theres no £ sign on the 3, although with British keyboard layout set it will still type one + the power supply is different but just chop off the US plug and replace with UK. don't forget to add US tax, and bin the packaging before you fly. Powerbooks have a worldwide warrenty so when your screen grows 'white spots' you'll be ok.

Whats the deal with US tax. IS the price quoted on the apple store, non-inclusive of US tax.
Is it like VAT in the UK, where you add %17.5 ontop of the purhase price?

it'll depend on the state but it's around 8.25. It'll be cheaper than little britian

It will be in New York where I get it...if I manage to scrounge the cash.
Perplexes me why the pricing is so different...if it is cheaper for me to fly to the states, buy a mac, and still save around £400.

Im kinda in the same boat with buying a flat screen apple monitor - they are about 200-300 quids cheaper from the US. I am in AZ in April but am worried about getting stung with VAT and DUTY when I get back to england! I could wrap it up as a present, but what silly airline would let you on a plane with a package that you allegedly know what it is!!
What should I do??
