Embedding SWF as image

Somewhat new at this, so please have mercy! I've noticed sites whose homepage (for instance) will embed their main image as an SWF file as opposed to a regular .jpg or .gif
What's the advantage of doing this? Size? Download time? Any constuctive replies are appreciated!

it doesn't really matter, that just depends on how and in what format you want to show yourself. The Flash is probably used for more interactive style imagery. Download time and Size shouldn't have anything to do with it. I guess you could use Flash to compress your images but that's not really typical.

Good to know... none of the few sites I saw used their images for anything interactive -- no motion, not a Flash movie -- just an image embeded as an .swf object.
I just assumed it was for some other reason. Cheers.

If they're simply replacing a graphic with a plain-vanilla swf then they're fools - crazy, crazy fools. See, that - of course, would be anathema to an open, free and democratic web.
On the other hand, if they're doing something other than show an image, say stream an mp3 or have a complex interaction, then that'd be good. Or, at least, better.

Well, the last site I saw was very nice -- worthy of NT in fact. The splash image looked like any regular .jpg/.gif
I was just curious to see the size of the image and discovered it was something else. My speakers are shot, so I can't say for sure there was no sound factor (but I don't think so).

The "splash" page is prolly their main .swf which then loads their externals...

a very, very subtle animation that imperceptibly changes over a 48 hour period?

you mean like TrueisTrue?

Here's one I saw...

It's one way to make it harder for people to steal your images.
Also, it could be used as a subtle flash detect.
But in the case of the link you posted, it doesn't look like either of the above.

True. Certainly it's harder to steal images and that's probably the only reason that particular link had it!
Plus, I'm not sure what a 'flash detect' is!...

the band with the type on it in that file is actually done in flash, cos if you change the quality setting the vector portion degrades. that could have been done in illustrator and saved as an swf or directly in flash. it was probably just a matter of convenience for the artist.
