I want to get a new ultra thin 17 monitor from apple.com and get it shipped to myself in London
The price difference is unreal
£383 as opposed to £550
Would I have to pay duty tax on it??
If so, is there a site how you can work it out OR does anyone just know the answer
Thanks
Karlo

*if* you get stung for VAT...and you most probably will - you're looking at another £80 - 115 on top....
- chall50
add import tax to that

They'll probably redirect you to the UK site if you enter a UK address, I don't think they're too keen on the whole global economy thing! Let us know if they accept the order though.

get someone in the states to buy it there and post it to you as a birthday gift

Check on the guarantee situation too, if it fucks up you don't want to be sending it back over there for repairs.

Can you do this!?!?!
Also, I am going to Arizona in April - could I buy one and bring it back??? Or is this the same deal with goods to declare etc??
- jevad0
you could buy one and bring it back and say it was a gift for a friend - wrap it up....
- mirola0
you can bring it back and not get charged import duty so long as it isn't in the packaging. my friend got charged import duty on a load of cds because they still had all the tower records wrapping on them.
- jevad0
that was silly!
- mirola0
yes, she is silly. they were crap cds to so it served her right really.

What about a second hand one?? Or would that be foolish??

Depending on the length of time you are in the states you are able to bring back a certain amount of duty free goods. A week may be $500 or so. IF you're going in with a computer or other valuable goods.... get them registered at the border so when you leave they don't try and get you to pay duty on them.
- ribit0
Why should you have to register?..don't they have to prove anything?
- Mal0
Anything packed and marked personal effects (used) should be safe.

I'm not sure how much they have to prove. I'm heading down tomorrow to a Tradeshow in Boston and we're bringing a couple of laptops and a monitor so we're going to register them at the border. Not a big deal you just get a reciept at the border. I've had my car torn apart and difficulty explaining $10 watches that I bought in NY City. I've also heard a few stories of folks having difficulty coming back into Canada with their computers.
