Any of you guys using GIMP instead of Photoshop? Do you think it's a decent substitute? I need to buy some new apps but that would be great if I could get the same results from a free app.

I use the gimp every now and then and I think that there is NO substitue for PS. Gimp is an awsome Open Source project and works well as a PS Elements replacement but any self respecting pro would not use it as a standard. give it a go and add a plugin if you have the time, it's easy to do and fun to help out.
peace peeps!

Is PS Elements and LE the same thing? I looked at the menu of LE and it looked like it had everything you need for image editing for the web.
I lost all my apps switching to osx/harddrive crashes, etc. Plus I havent been doing freelance from home lately so I'm looking around for lower cost alternatives. I'm using lowcost and open source stuff right now like:
Blender
BBEdit
Fetch
GIMPI'm not really into pirating software. Plus most of the apps in the new Macromedia trials ran like shit.
The only apps I really want to get are PS, InDesign and Flash.

well... GIMP will get you through the tough times. But I would suggest trying to buy an older version like PS 6 or maybe cling on to a company that has a registered copy of the program and buying an extra licence. It's really not pirating if you eventually bye the program. I consider it as a TRIAL.
Do what u have to do to design!

True, true. I was wondering what is smarter, getting free software or putting $2000 on a credit card for it. Sounds like a no brainer.
I also wonder how many designers around here use pirated software percentage wise.
I hear a lot of people here make fun of posers who use cracked copies of PS, etc.
Im sure its close to like 90%. More then people here would like to admit.

people know pirating is wrong. BUT making people pay $X amount of dollars for a tool that we NEED is wrong too thats when borrowing comes into effect. As long as you buy it eventually it's O.K. to me.
Take care comb your hair..
