Lucky you!
I'm planning to go there later this year -- of course, depends on how high/low the U.S. $ is then.
Never been there -- no advice. But I'm wondering if you need to know Italian or is it like Amsterdam where everybody knows English?

lucky one!
dont miss to visit 'piazza del popolo', it's where the venician hang around, so you will get the impression you are actually in italy... the food there is good and ppl there actually talk italian:-) I dont know for winter, but in summer is where all town meets.
avoid to get to any restaurant in the near of piazza san marco...all tourist traps...
...and take a trip to the near islands, like murano, aso.
have a nice trip!

charm of Venice is you shouldn't plan things. you can walk around like crazy and can't get too lost (it is an island).
My wife and I would walk and walk and take side roads and little back roads and you find cool things.
If you take a gondola ride. Ask for price before you get on the boat. I got ripped off.
Murano was cool.
Stayed at the Hotel Bisanzio which was a 3 star that was cheap, clean. We weren't in the Hotel long anyway.
Seafood rissoto at the Trattoria Giardinetto was great. It's on Ruga Giuffa:

coolio... thats the type of info I like... I'm like that will just potter around, and you find the best stuff... not that my missus always agrees!
Looking for a hotel at the moment... but short breaks is never worth anything too major... we'll only have hand luggage each anyway...
