G5 Spinup?

I just came into my office to find my G5 in sleep mode (that's not the surprise) and making an incredibly loud noise. My best guess is that it sounded like the hard drive was spinning at what seemed like an extremely high rate. When I tried to wake it from sleep mode it wouldn't respond.
Anyone deal with their new Mac racing at incredible and unhealthy speeds? Anyone have any solutions to prevent this from happening again? Take sleep mode off?
thanks.

DOH!!! I knew being ahead of my time would come back to haunt me. :-)
i went to macfixit.com's forums and found a thread on "my G4 sounds like a lawnmower" but that really offered no help.
Wonder if it had been spinning like that all weekend and if that has a negative effect. Don't need a fried hard drive.

I had the same problem... along with others. Mine did it everytime i put the hard drive to sleep. The other problems were descovered to be as a result of a bad RAM chip... the wicked wurrr hasn't happened since the RAM swap. Not sure it was related though.

The problem is your videocard causing the fan to spin out of control.
I hope you have Apple care or is still under the 90 day coz you will need to replace the videocard.

surely it's covered under the 1 year warranty?
can anyone shed light on this?

first, back all you stuff up.
second, call AppleCare and explain what happened.I think it's best to just shut my G5 down if I'm going to be gone for a day or two. I only do sleep mode for short periods of time.
You'll get your best answers form AppleCare. Good Luck.

I love Apple but....Good luck getting them to help you- I bought a last gen. G4 with dual 1GHZ-- Next thing I know its loud as hell. They offered a patch after a lot of digging on the net and NO help from Apple: An entire new power supply and fan you had to pay 20$ US to buy, and then install yourself or pay to install on something they admitted was their wrong!! It took over an hour cuz you had to take the whole thing apart-- After all that its still louder than any othe computer I've owned.
Hope you have better luck.
