hey ya.
Would appreciate constructive thoughts on this stage 1 mockup for a large Uni site. Brand fonts are Gill Sans & minion, Uni colours are primary blue, gold & red.
Original Site: (yuk)

which one you want me to click?

this first one is the original site as it is, just so you know what is being re-designed
the other two are the mockups, front page & content page mockups
so all of em i guess :)

i like it. nice.
some of the type's a bit "dodgy" though, (the copyright, etc.)
but i like it.
- blackspade0
sweet thanks,
the content is just there to hold space all yet to be finalised.
what do you mean by dogey? :)

looks fresh and modern. the old one looks a bit stuffy. good job!
the text on this page is anti aliased because it is a screen shot from mac osx right?
http://webdev3.otago.ac.nz/~phut…it would just look dodgey to windows users.

thanks man
oh ok, i get what hes sayin then.
anyone else, thoughts, crits??
chur! :)

On top of my head; your the antia-alias it's coming on a bit too strong.
Secondly, for the leftside menu (Information About), how about bringing in just a little more space betwen the lines. After my morning coffee I personally have a hard time holding my mouse hand perfectly still, so when I choose one option (say research for instance) and get the submenu, I would shake enough to throw me off to another section (like studying at Otago).

Of course that also means that I should not have that bucket of coffee everyday.
- blackspade0
sweet good point, so you think just increase the leading a bit? im thinking maybe ditch the lines all together?
all the text will be HTML text eventually so dun worry bout the anti alias (front page)
thanks for your thoughts Peter

The blue is too blue. I´d take a navy or deep navy tone.
Maybe a color fade would be nice.

interesting point,
the thing is, on PC's that ive looked at, that blue is much darker almost dark navy. The Universitys blue is very primary & bright, ive already darkened it slightly, i might try some sort of slight fade or gradient tho :)

a little worried that @ 800 x 600 the bottom headings drop off...

watch using dhtml menus like that on the last comp. it acts really poorly in mozilla.
for large universities, the site must be usable and accessible due to the huge influx of different users.
a uni site has to communicate across the widest varity of systems.
dynamic menus like that can cause big problems.
with that said, i do like the layout of the 2nd comp.
:)

agreed sparker.
we were just experimenting with that menu to save space (since the sub navigations are gonna be long and ugly) but agreed im expecting to run into probs with it, and we will prob go back to a strait text nav
thanks man! :)
