Does anyone know anything about the design/web scene in North Carolina? Is it any good? What are some good firms?

Not exactly sure yet, but looking at Raleigh, Charlotte areas.

Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte are nice areas to live and work. I almost moved there recently to work with Big Blue on a Flash Project, but decided against contractor type crap

Never been to Raleigh - but I live in Charlotte and there are a lot of top notch firms here - and a lot of firms that shouldn't be in business.
I'll drop a list in a few.

I live and work in Raleigh. Its great here. All the fun of a big city without actually having a big city :P
I'm doing graphic design in-house for a financial firm. Its cool work. All my design friends around here have had no prob getting a job. There's plenty to do design wise. I'm not too familier with the design studios around. But I would love to learn more about the local scene here.
I hear that the local AIGA is pretty good. I've been thinking of joining.

Who do you for in Charlotte Skylark?

Chapel Hill/ Raleigh here.
The work's not all that plentiful, IMHO. However, there are definitely alot of creatives here, and growth potential is great.
Most of the big contracts are for the Biotech & Tech Firms in the Park. They're handled nationally, anyway.
Praxis is a local house that has contact with the street. They do 2d design mainly. http://www.praxisstudios.com/mai…
A major player in the 3d industry here is http://www.edharriss.com/ and he's the president of the local SIGGraph and could be a good contact for you.
Unfortunately, most of the gaming companies here have closed or moved away. A recent exception to that would be Epic's sibling: http://www.scionstudios.com/
Artspace would be a good resource for you as well: http://www.carolinaarts.com/104a…
The main local A&E paper is: http://indyweek.com
I've enjoyed living in the triangle for the last 8 years. not too crowded, mild weather, great music scene, etc. Feel free to contact me w/ questions.

Yay Wilmington!
Yay Charlotte!
I lived in both cities back and forth over 10 years... I miss Wrightsville Beach still to this day.
As far as the topic, I don't know of any shops in the state.
