3D Studio Max is best for 3d support in graphics design, game development and visualisation in general, but only if you have a couple of grand to spend on it.
Second best, if you don't have thousands of dollars to spend is http://www.eovia.com/carrara

actually, the software's cheaper than ever. if you think about it, the $2k cost isn't that hard to recoup after you've completed a couple of contracts.
brice isn't really 'full-featured', its mainly used for landscaping and advanced displacement. 3dsmax has athe biggest support community and has long been the low-priced underdog in terms of 'high-end' 3d. XSI is a beautiful piece of software. Maya is an advertising hype machine with alot of potential. For low-price, though, be sure to check out HASH's Animation Master ($300). I use Softimage and 3dsmax and like 'em both.
