This is perhaps a stupid question but I am stupid when it comes to technical stuff that involves lots of wires and boxes with blinking lites.
I just had high speed cable installed today...I have two separate cable lines (one for my computer and one intended for tv ). Would it be better to get a router and figure out how to network both or get another cable modem for the other line? Or does it not work that way?
See? I'm clueless.

one cable goes to your TV Cable box, other goes to your Cable Modem. should be good.
only reason you would need a router is if you want to share your internet cable connection with other computers.

yes, I do! I realize rereading I didn't make it clear. I want to hook up two computers in my house...I don't care about tv cable so what I'm trying to ask is is it possible to just get two cable modems and hook them into the separate cable lines or do I have to have a router for that?

yep, router it is. one cable modem, one router, up to however many computers you want. (depending on the router). You can also hook up a wireless router or a regular router. my setup, cable modem to Asante Router to my desktop, then i also have an Airport Base Station plugged into the router to have a wireless setup for my iBook.

Unless I'm mistaken, 2 cable modems would require 2 separate accounts.
As said above, you can get a router, some cable, and connect as many computers as your router has input ports.
Go nuts.

Plus, a router normally comes with a pretty decent firewall as well.

We've got a cable modem hooked up out in the living room with a Linksys wireless router
works great.
2 modems would require another account and would be expensive anyway.
do NOT buy NetGear stuff!
