I have to say that I find it just as snappy on OSX as OS9. I've finally been able to migrate to the Creative Suite and InDesign CS is absolutely ace! It's snappy and a joy to use over my old QuarkXPress days... let's face it Quark are dead!
I'm on a PowerBook G4 867 with a respectable 768MB RAM. I booted back to OS9 the other day and after 15 mins of use my system froze and I had to do a hard restart. I used to question OSX every minute but since Jaguar and now Panther I'm a sold man.
Yes it maybe not as snappy but you'll thank OSX in many other ways.
Just my two cents :)

Yeah fontbook is crap. It messed up my whole font library. Took me a few backup CD-Rs to replace everything the way it was and I'm now a happy Suitcase 11.0.2 user. It works fine under Panther and I wouldn't touch any other font managment app. I do miss ATM Deluxe on OS9 but yeah Suitcase is fine... not perfect... but fine.
