i'm building a pretty large flash site and have a crazy question...
does anybody know if there is a way to use javascript to insert an element into a browser windows history list...
so it would be available without actually having gone there...

I don't think this is possible, but why use the browsers history? You can easily make an array that works the same way - a 'breadcrumb trail' that gets added to with any action, then call up any item at any time.

i'm trying to use the back button in the same way as the above example (thanks epictive)
i'm loading the initial site section and content by passing arguments via a query string... the same function that handles this also drives all navigation in the site... so i was thinking I'd add each nav call to the history and make use of the back button also...

The example above has source files and is what you are looking for. What question do you have still?

Keep in mind there are limitations with Flash and Javascript on a Mac. It still works but will just hop to the section, not slide back like it does on PCs. So you might want to test it out.
