That is one way to do it. More than likely, all of the products you see like this are 3D and not photographs - it's just cheaper and more flexible that way (same goes for television ads with products and/or cars).

So.. if the client is using 3d software. Do I need to output loads of jpegs from slightly different angles?
or is there a way of exporting that will give me all the angles in one go?

naah if it's in 3d format already, open it in a 3d app and export it as a quicktime vr. i did one a couple of years ago, but can't remember the exact process off the top of my head. it's just a matter of placing the 3d object where you want it and adding a camera (i think) and then exporting as QTVR. It should be in most 3d packages.
