The "client" section on design company sites. Isn';t this just meant to be a list showing who've you've worked for and maybe have a link to them. Not actually show the work you completed for the client? Isn't the actual work meant to go in a Portfolio section? I know you can have the work in the client section, but think of it in terms of what the majority do.
Also, what resolution do most of you design for?

Why would someone just want to see the clients you've worked for though? I mean besides superficial companies.

Nice one, I think that question touches some parts of information design.
I'm not a master on the subject, but I like to provide a viewer of my portfolio with an ability to sort my work in various ways: type of work, date, etc.
I also like to throw in "by name/client" on that same page, and technicaly that is a client list.

It's just that i'm having an argument with my brother over it. He aint a designer and i visit heaps of new sites everyday. A strong majority of them only use the client section as a list, but he thinks he knows everything.

a client list is a list of clients.. tell him to talk his way out of that.
- Peter0
Use common sense, not a "heap of new websites".

Yeh, it's definately common sense to me, but showing what the majority do is the only way he "might" admit he's wrong. He's such a stubborn dick

Never over-inform. You can have links to case studies and links to work, that are in teh portfolio section, but a client section is for a list of clients, by sector, industry etc...that you have worked for.
Design for 800x600 or die.
- rasp0
do i die?
- jevad0
do you design for 8x6?
- paulrand0
I don't like client lists, they always seem like designers think the name of the client somehow legitimizes the design, but that may be because i don't like my clients
- rasp0
depends on if im designing for an average user or for stuff that goes to design companies/art directors
- paulrand0
jevad, how soon are you moving? Good luck to you
- Peter0
paulrand, a fellow designer can judge the work by another designer by viewing it.
Avarage Joe can't do it quite as well as.
However, seeing that a designer has been entrusted the work from a respected company might help them to decide wether the designer is good or not.
Of course, it's not fail-proof deal, but I can see it as sort of a reference.
- Peter0
...for avarage Joe's clients he got by casualy "dropping" his namecard in the elevator of their building...
- Peter0
wow, that last one was a cut/paste error.
Ignore!

Client list should really be under an "about" section. Youre basically saying heres who we are and who we work with. Why add another nav item/section with a list when you can consolidate.
- jevad0
because in this fickle world the peopleyou work with and have worked with can have a heavy sway in getting new business...you don't want visitors having to look around for that kind of info...you want to give it to them easily...

dunno if you were commenting on my post jevad but if you have the client list on the about section and have the work for those clients in your "work/portfolio" section youve got it clear. Just seems like a client list is a dead ensd page that might as well be dead ended with an about section as it reallty relates to who you are and who you do.
