Hi Chaps, Happy New Year!
The Basic Question is: IE 5.X Mac or Opera... Are they worth supporting fully ? Or should I stick with what works fine in all other browsers and have it degrade gracefully ? More detailed explaination below:
I currently designing a site for a client, they wanted to update their site to use full "Web Standards" and I was more than happy to do that using fully XHTML Strict and CSS based code but now I have a little problem.
I am trying to use a modified version of the Fahner Image Replacement trick but instead of toggling the visibility of the text (which is a method known to work for some screen-readers but not all)
I am setting the text indent to -200px and the overflow to hidden and this works fine in IE6 PC, Mozilla PC & MAC, Safari and Netscape but it does not work in Opera or IE 5 Mac!
Are IE 5 Mac or Opera worth the effort these days ?

Well yeah man - or you totally defeat the purpose of what you are trying to do...it may be a hassle debugging and adjusting so that it works for the remaining two - but think about
a) how much you will learn
b) how fucking awesome you will feel after you've done it and it works across all supporting browsers and platform

Thanks Javed,
I agree in a way that not supporting them would kind of defeat the object of what I am trying to do.
However the problem I think is that Opera and IE5 are not supporting Web Standards properly and so adjusting the code to fit is ineffect no longer using Web Standards ?
So here now is the real question then I think. - What are more important IE5 Mac and Opera OR a handful of screen-readers ?
I probably know the answer but your views would be helpful.

Are you sure about that? I thought IE5 for mac was very web standards supportive - same for opera?

actually, both have some little quirks with displaying properly designed sites.

thanks for that sparker - got any links you can share about this?

I think it is safe to say that ALL browsers still have quirks here and there (some more than others).
I am still undecided! Any other view points ?

I have found this : http://blog.tom.me.uk/2003/08/07…
Which is a similar but alternative way to what I was doing and solves the problem!
