well there is Joel Spolsky's "User Interface Design for Programmers". it is a tad too short and primarily aimed for non-designers, but otherwise it is fun to read and teaches you about the basics.
i bought mine at a discount and at that price it was worth every buck.

Designing Visual Interfaces ( kevin mullet & darrel sano) is nice and broad, and i really like the icon book visual symbols for computer systems and documentation (william horton) just because it is so specific but reminds you of lots of little things like effective resolution and so fourth
