i'm thinking of buying a new monitor. Should I save money by buying a 17" or is it really worth it to spend extra on a 19"?
Are 19" monitors overkill? What do you suggest?
- jpea0
19's are never overkill. Deskspace-wise, they're not much larger than a 17". 21" and up are significantly larger though and weigh a ton more.
I have a couple of lacie electron blue 19's and love em.

the owner has a 20" imac.... and he doesnt even design - reserved for dvds and porn....
thats overkill.

19!!! no doubt...

I use a 20" Cinema display and i run out of space
it really depends on what you need.
If you use allot of programs like PS Ill, DW etc . then you will love the added desktop real estate, but if your just playing games and surfing the web get a 17".
there have been studies showing dramatic productivity increases using Larger monitors

industry73,
that study on productivity and monitor size is interesting. the more you see the more you feel emersed in that environment i guess...

Once you use a 19, you'll never go back.

19" overkill?!?
hahahha
I have dual 21" at work and I still want more!
19" at home and I could do with more - go 19"
- brandelec0
go 15", give me the money you save for good advice on saving money
; )

23" and need every mm.
don't get something big just for the sake of having the monster monitor...get what you actually need. that way when you have to drag it around, you can think of those reasons while you get tired and pist.

loved my beautiful 19" and it died on me while moving to a new apartment. using my spare 17" its find what a flat panel though and it will be 19" :) if you got the money get the 19" if not 17 is better than nothing.
- quik0
I /was/ running a dual 21" and a 17" alongside, until the 17 died.. so back to a single 21... and I struggle to use anything much less than that..

19" CRTs are dirt cheap right now. I just bought a ginormous one from Best Buy for a tad over $200. It's the one with the 3 tropical birds? I love it.
- gabriel_pc0
yeah fate, I have the same one. Use that with my Enron clearance sale 15" flat panel and I'm all set.
- brundlefly0
view sonic is the bird one.
I run a NEC 19 and a LG 19 on my PC, its nice.

I got a 19" at home. Its perfect. kinda wish i had a 15" LCD for a bit of extra room but 19" is enough to do work on.
Beware of buying a cheapo CRD that uses Apature Grile, i bought one before i knew what it was now i have two thin horozontal wires in my screen :(
- brundlefly0
the ones with the two thin lines are trinitron tubes....they usually give the best colour, for your dollar, but they seem to go bad after 2 years in my experience......been through 10 in my design life
- sexypixel0
those horizontal lines are on all sony's also, they are harldy noticable
