I personally use a 12" iBook right now for all of my design work. I find it very convienent if I want to create away from my desk (e.g. friend's house, cafe) although I do miss having a larger monitor. Which do you prefer?

I used to hate working on a laptop... I think it was because the keyboard was so awful... but now I use it nearly all the time, and can take it to work, use it at home, and also to presentations... there si nothing worse than a machine that is not set up properly and you psend the first half an hour of the meeting trying to get plug-ins downloaded through someones firewall...
Also when I go home I connect to my wireless network I set up with my desktop PC running in the study... so I can sit on the couch and type this... technology eh!

buy a monitor for your laptop, you cant design on a twelve inch screen. titch.

sexypixel,
i probably will buy a monitor soon and upgrade my whole set-up since that's what you have to do nowadays to keep up. BUT there is something to be said about having to come home to a little computer vs. a big one. Desktops sometimes freak me out because they take up so much physical space and are such a daunting presence. Little computers are less intimidating and make this whole electronic age seem more manageable.

I agree, but you cant realistically use photoshop/flash illustrator on a 12 inch screen. 15 inches maybe.
I used to design soley on my 15'" laptop but then my eyes started killing me, now i just use 17" crt hooked up to the laptop, no big grey box needed

I have 4 pc's but still design on my laptop.
with the wireless side of it you can be anywhere in the house and work/surf/play games which keeps my missus happy as she thinks i got the laptop so i can sit with her in the evening :)

sexypixel,
I know you're right. I should really invest and buy a monitor. The 12" screen gives me tunnel vision sometimes not to mention I find myself crouching my back so that I am viewing my screen at eye level. Maybe the real question for me is good ergonomics vs. being a cheap ass.

For those of you who design on laptops are you like me and feel strain on your eyes & upper back?

no, i got one of those knee tray things (like a normal dinner tray but it's got a bean bag on the bottom)
put the laptop on that and you don't get a burnt leg from the fan and it's pretty stable to use.

im on a laptop too all the time for everything, design included.
(another mac + 20" monitor from sits under my desk, unused now)
most of my design work happens away from desks.
its nice to get away from sitting in one place all the time... i'd be less creative if that was'nt the case.
ps: im usually in bed when im on NT, thanks to airport.. :)
eeee by gum isnt modern technology grand...
etc

rasp,
how big is your laptop screen? maybe i should just get a bigger laptop, powerbook G4 maybe...
- rasp0
ive only got a 15 incher (1280 x854) if i had the cash id be on a 17"

rasp,
do you not use your desktop because it's an older model than your laptop?

i also use my vaio notebook for work now. it has 1024x768, which is not enough space for proper working, definitely.
but since i got the 19" attached with another 1280 res, I'm really happy with it..
it needs some more ram though..
- rasp0
yes its an older mac, but i wouldnt use it, even if it was the same (or slightly better) spec than my laptop... i just dont have the need for a desktop model with the work i do.
it would be nice to have a larger monitor for sure, but the screen size has never been an issue.. yet.
- tralphaz0
i don't think my 1024 res iBook will show a 1280 res image on a 1280 res monitor.
the iBook only can mirror what's on it's screen out to another monitor rather than having the other monitor act as an expansion to the the iBook desktop space.
i think i might need a new computer if i want better resolution. G5's are expensive...
- tomkat0
theres a patch for the ibook. really. you can expand to a 2nd monitor and have 2times 1024.
google it.

also, the 12" powerbook has a diff LCD than the 15"
i hate it for real color representation....

design on a 17 inch pbook
1440x900used a ibook for a year before I upgraded, ran the hack to split to second monitor, instead of mirror. Could run the external at 1600x1200 @85 hertz....
was a little slow but pretty darn cool.

I've been using a 15 Powerbook fopr personal stuff for 2 years. But I do real work on a Dual display PC.
