I lived/worked there for 6 months - did the freelance thing and it was the most awesome time of my life :) I was making a fortune - about US400/day in the hand (this was during the dot com boom and I would expect rates may have even halved). The cost of living is expensive but you can live on the cheap - but not as a long term solution. I was in a studio apartment that barely fit its contents of a small single bed, kitchen sink and closet (shared toilet and bathroom with 16 other apartments). It an awesome design scene, club scene, and an awesome base to travel europe. If you're coming from the US your biggest obstacle will be getting a working visa.

yes it is expensive but its not impossible... thing with London is, no matter what you earn, you'll always spend all of it.. like they say, it costs you a tenner to get out of your front door in London

It's a great city. I will miss it to be sure but 6 years is enough...it sucks you dry.
Transport is fucked, old, shitty, unreliable and overpriced.
Rent is crazy...but there are affordable area's...right now my wife and I pay £1,200 pcm between us for a one bed 1,000 sq ft pad in hampstead...but we choose to pay that much because we absolutely love the area - we could get much more bang for our buck further down te road in camden...but let's face it if that place is a fucking dump.
There is so much to do here - culturally I have yet to find another city in teh world that matches it - maybe New York...but the weather is total fucking shit and I find the English, on the whole, a miserable bunch generally, which doesn't help! ha.
To summarise....over priced city with a useless transport and infrastructure system, that will suck you dry and spit you out.
Have fun.

"...and I find the English, on the whole, a miserable bunch generally..."
haha, Nic - thank the lord you didn't become a tourist guide. "And here we have, in my opinion, the shitty Big Ben.. which sucks... "

i was reading this thread to try and get me self a bit more cultured...but now i can't stop laughing at the thought of pissed off tourists asking for their money back...jox that is funny as hell....

i heard in England, you can't earn a living, but you can live to learn. *shrug* i'd rather slit my throat than be in london, personally.

"i'd rather slit my throat than be in london, personally"
I bet you a dollar to the pound that given the choice between having to move to London, or slitting your throat, you be riding a bid red bus before teatime.
"Look kids, Big Ben, the Tower of London..."

I've been here over two years. I have often uttered the words "I need to get out of here"... I have a love/hate relationship with the City... but the bits I love far out weigh the bad.
I take holidays by myself now... I find myself going out to the hills, sitting on them smoking me pipe, getting away from it all, then do a Kerouac, and march back to the smoke to drink, meet people, play with ladies....
Then I go nuts in London and repeat the process.
I can only leave London for a month at a time.....

Its the best and worst place in the world.
Ive been here for 8 years, and I dont really have a bad thing to say about it, other than the obvious...
If you make it in London, youll have a great time.
