Do some art institutes/colleges favor your application more if you have a portfolio of design stuff to show?
- Fher0
it depends...
actually some universitys demand you to show something like a Portfolio, but if you dont get asked for one, i dunno
- rasp0
yes. it shows them you are interested enough and/or serious about art/design
- rasp0
fate, this might be helpful
"There is no single "right" way to prepare a portfolio. A different presentation is appropriate for each person, each situation and each interview. You need to understand what kind of portfolio you are creating. Is it to get into school, to get an internship, to get a first job, a second job? Each of these will require a different selection of projects."

Thanks rasp and Fher, appreciate the insight. I make very decent grades right now and will graduate with honors, but that's nothing all that special. BUT I am accumulating a number of nice pieces of work and I'm hoping that interest will get me accepted more readily.
- Fher0
btw where are you aplying pal?
- fate0
Haven't decided :p Probably just a state college. I didn't really want to start another "what college is best" thread, so I went with my other concern.
- rasp0
nice one. good luck

If you apply at the http://www.artic.edu/ Then what you got in your portfolio doesn't really count. Its how much money you got.
I don't think schools expect to see design work if you are coming out of High School. Are you straight out of High School?
- fate0
Yay, I'm straight out of high-school, but I design in pretty much every moment of free time, so I have some pleb-impressing stuff racked up
- err0
damn keep it up.
When I was in HS all I had was a friends band CD cover I did by hand. But they broke up b4 it got printed.

colleges / universities know what to expect from applicant portfolios...they are looking for potential, not polished work...the fact that you are designing already is a very big plus...in you application process i would be very leary of design programs that do not ask to see a folio...
good luck...
