don't want to drop a bunch of money, is there an inexpensive program that will give you the basics? I'd really like to start learning it, but don't want to drop alot of dough just to start out learning. I'd hate to drop a g or two and end up not using it six months later.

I feel sick when I think of the money I've spent on software.

the best opensource modeling app. HIGHLY recommended. It doesnt render or texture yet, but the modelling capabilties surpass most commercial 3d packages.

demo version of 3DStudio Max 6

i wish they'd give more than 30 days though...

When I was in malaysia they had 3ds Max for about $2 and Maya for about $3.

then, of course, there's always the 'evaluating the full version through slightly illegal means' option :)

but seriously, try wings3d.
i've been using 3dsMAX since version 1, but i find myself modelling certain things in wings just because it kicks so much ass.

Keyword: 'Keygen'

toastie, i'm sure you're comfortable with wings by now, but have you tried blender? it's open source as well and works on several platforms.

tfs, for blender i'd suggest a guide. but unlike other guides, theirs comes with the full product for free.
however, if you're goal is to eventually use 3dstudio, i'd just find a used copy of it on ebay or get yourself a 'temporary' copy. :)

i've tried blender for awhile and i dont really like it. the interface is probably the most unintuitive thing i've ever seen. And even after you get used to it, it's not very streamlined. wings is really intuitive and has some really powerful tools.

http://www.softimage.com this shit RAWKS man! Or you could learn AE 6.0

at least once a year i say to myself "i'm gonna learn 3d!"
and i never do.
- toastie0
it takes alot of patience to do 3d. no matter how good you are, modelling a complex model is painstaking business.
It's all well worth it in the end though :)

Corel's Bryce 5 is pretty intuitive and i think it will set you up to learn others well in the future.
