The GIMP should be fairly useful in a few months. I've been regularly compiling the CVS versions and i see it going in a really good direction. The damn thing has always been almost as powerful as Photoshop, it's its nerd-written GUI that's completely unusable. Although its been getting much better lately, with dockable panels and all kinda cool stuff.

I agree, the GIMP is great but it's GUI sucks SOOO much...I can't even stand to use it. Actually, Linux GUIs in general all look like Winamp skins. I can't even bear to look at Linux anymore.
Fireworks doesn't have as many features as Photoshop, but it's much quicker to use--I can bust through projects at least 4 times faster with fireworks.
On the other hand, Macromedia has awful management and always releases buggy software, whereas Photoshop is, and always has been, rock solid.
I used to think that ImageReady really sucked, but with the new CS release they fixed A LOT and made it much more intuitive.
So...I say Fireworks for general web stuff, Photoshop for everything else.
