I seem to always come across clients that either do not have the money or do not want to spend the money on thorough, researched, well-formulated logo design. They usually just want to spend a few hundred (canadian) dollars on something that looks okay.
I personally would rather do what I feel is the proper way and charge accordingly, yet I do not want to turn away an EASY few hundred bucks.
What would you do in this situation? Tell them to get real: good logos aren't cheap, or just doodle something up and get them to pay you in cash?

I would explain exactly like you just did - good design ain't cheap.
You'll throw something together for a couppla hundreds, but it's no way near the spiffalicioussess of the logo they would've seen if they weren't lousy cheapskates.

tell them to either get one or pay you for one. screw that.
