The record label I work for is releasing a series of different bands covering songs that they claim as an influence. The art concept is to mimick the original bands cover with slight changes. Now I feel that if I do this It's really my work and I don't know if I should display it in a portfolio. What does everyone think?

Make it your own. It's cool to riff off of work that's already completed.

Yeah, but for instance, one of the covers will mimick the
Pixies-Surfer rosa cover, only we are going to get some topless-black-haired-emo girl to pose for the picture. I just feel like I won't be creating anything since it will be almost exactly the same.

Make it different and an homage. Just like a cover song is for a musician. Come on man. this is could be awesome.

I was looking for a link to a page about album cover homage's, but couldn't find one...
But the point was going to be that some rips have become kind of iconic in their own right... Tone Loc's riff/rip on"Loc'ed After Dark" of Lou Donaldson's "A New Perspective" album cover has become better know to our generation than the original... (that's the only one i can think of off the top of my head, but there are lots more)
there's a book called Ego Trip's Book of Rap Lists with a whole section on Cover homage's and rips, you should check it out to see how others have done it successfully...

London Calling is a rip of an elvis record cover, which is more famous today?
