I think it's a good idea but most if not all of the freelance designers don't have agents, why?
Photographers, Illustrators, Fashion Designers got em
Is it because as a designer you don't get paid like photographer and illustrator?

how much is the cut
usually 10% right
is work coming in as aexpected or you're still husting away?
after what happed to janne I think everybody needs an agent so you can focus on putting pixels together instead of dealing with paperwork and hunting down your hard earned money

it's a wierd one for graphic/interactive designers, everyone wants something for nothing and doesn't really see the art, craft, graft and time spent on it.

i agree with smellvetica, illustration is considered an art, web is just considered moving pixels on a screen, clients dont give the right attention on this work...
..but maybe with an agent things could be different

i think it depends where you operate. in holland you have plenty of agents for designers. depending on your experience you get paid as much as photographers, illustrators etc.
another thing is that clients you get thru your agent will always try to bypass them on later projects to obviously cut down the costs (agent fee). if you're smart you don't do it and handle it thru your agent. a) the agent got you the client in the 1st place b) you don't have to hassle with the client about your fees since the agent basically maintains fees and almost never negotiate about it.

sounds very intersting! i hate paperwork. (who doesn’t?) but i don’t know where/how to get an agent in germany. any experiences?

germany is a bit weird regarding agents for designers. they have agents for almost every creative profession but not for design / web. i actually know only one:
but must say they have an extremely low day rate. for dutch designers very very scary.

ah, thanks! gonna have a look.

its an interesting point. I think last months creative review had an article in it on the direction of graphic design and why it isn't covered in the same way as other design fields. Product design and architecture have sections in national newspapers and magazines etc but 'graphics' isn't considered in the same way. Strange when you think we are probably more visually aware than ever. We are certainly bombarded with more graphic content than ever before.
