ipod :)
you can backup your files and listen to tunes where and when you want what more could you want.
And if you need more than 40gb buy two :)

i recently bout a 120g external hard drive and put it an a USB 2.0 case and i wanted to use it for both mac and pc like yourself. I had heaps of trouble making it work for both formats. Ended up having to partition the drive in two. One for mac and one for pc. The mac can only read the FAT32 formatted drive (which can only ever be a maximum of 32gb) and the pc can read both the FAT and NTFS formats. Come to think of it now i shouldve made two separate Mac drives and one pc.
....Stoopid me.

yeah, for anything below OS10 u need FAT, however I would recomend just going with NTFS.
external hd is just a case with regular hd inside. meaning u can get cheap FireWire case and insert regular (meaning cheaper) hd inside.

but if you format it all ntfs you cannot go back and forth between mac and pc. Mac will not read it.
