I disagree with your first part rasko, but your second part is true pretty much.
I've been at the law firm I work at for over a year and have attended one "Holiday Party" (to be PC) last year. It's a great time, a wonderful meal, open bar, and it's just about the one time of the year that employees at our smaller suburban office gather with everyone from the main downtown Chicago office.
People perform skits they've created and in so many ways it's like a big roast where you feel like for one night you can get away with saying whatever you want-in a funny way, of course. It was the first party of that type that I'd gone to with an employer-this is the first job I've had were I'm on salary and working 40 hours a week, etc.
It was memorable because it was enjoyable, a good time with people who are normally pretty serious about their jobs while at work (as attorneys go) and our Managing Partner gave a nice speech about the past year and where we're going from there. Two associates were named Partner, and that's a really big thing. We have a great working environment here and wonderful philosophies about the work we do, how we serve our clients, etc. We have approx 60 attorneys and total employees approx 130.
Unfortunatly, I know many of you don't have this in your jobs, or work in small places where the holiday party is little more than a bar tab on the company's dime. But they're completely enjoyable and I see no problem with enjoying something that is a culmination of a year you're proud of as a company and a celebration of the holidays.
