Austin is wonderful. Check the Austin Chronicle web site and see if there are any bands you like playing when you'll be there.
It's the music capital of the world, you know.
I live in Chicago now, but Austin and the area it's in, to the west and the south is known as the Hill Country, and I've spent alot of time down there while growing up in Dallas. Beautiful rivers, hills, rock cliffs, tons of vegitation, and a nice pace to life down there.
I'll be there for a few days over Christmas, and for a week in June to show my girlfriend all the fun stuff there is to do there in the summer. My parents are having a house built to retire in down in New Braunfels, where I first went tubing in 1987.

Houston, goto the Cy Twombly museum, near the rothko chapel for sure.
Austin, do the AMA, there's always something good there. Catch http://www.scottbiram.com at the Parlor on Monday nights or at club DeVille on Wed.'s - hes great. Also try Gingerman's or Lovejoy's for great beers, Casino El Camino for a kickass jukebox. What are ya looking for?

Also, the snake farm just south of San Marcos is worth a stop for a t-shirt...

I remember trying to talk my dad into taking me to that snake farm when I saw the signs on our way to Natural Bridge Caverns!

Yeah, the snake farm is pretty cool - the monkeys and leemurs- AND they have a groundhog colony. Kind of depressing, but really cool shirts. Ahhh natural bridge caverns...I forgot about that place!
Texmex? There is no substitute for Tamale House, ask anyone.
