Is one of the Radeon 9800 series cards complete overkill for graphic design / pshop etc? I need a new card - don't play games or do 3D, but want something that will boost graphic apps / photo editing as much as possible without overdoing it... any suggestions? (for PC)

the greatest majority of increases in processing power over the past few years has really been focused on 3d accelleration. what you'll get with the 9800 is marginally speedier application redraw as compared to the earlier models.
however, the earlier model radeons were crap, had crap drivers. i don't know what the situation is now. personally, i have two eVGA geforce4 mx440se's running my three monitors quite good. i can even play games with little disadvantage.

ATI has come a long way for PC's
but for 2d graphics, you should really look into the nvidia or matrox cards as well. I always found them to be more stable for pixel pushing, with much better colour options. You will save yourself about half in price too...

Thanks - I'll look into those. I've just ordered a new monitor http://www.necmitsubishi.com/pro… so I want to be able to get the best from it.
What should I look for in a nvida or matrox card? 128mb?
Cheers for the help :)

ATI
Matrox
Nvidiaall good cards....I like the matrox and nvidia cards, as they are more applied towards the 2d-3d apps, not games.
ATI is a gaming card company, that makes really KICK ass cards....its a matter of choice, 128-256 9500, 4200fx etc etc...do some cnet'in
I am running Nvidia on all my boxes.

Yeah that Parhelia rocks. I have one at work and its cool as. Never had any problems with it. Games do look good on it too - but doesn't seem to work to well with older games... It is the first of the Direct X 9.0 breed... but will soon be dated.
I have the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro at home on my own machine - which is fantastic for gaming and also performs well with ps/premiere and the like.
For work only - buy the Parhelia. For games/work buy a Radeon
And I just ordered my 19" TFT.
Hurry up dabs...

Matrox wins my vote for 2D - especially if you're going 2 or more monitors.
