I'm having a problem defragging my C: drive. After it's complete it's still 59% frag. Is there software out there that could do a better job or what? I have 6 gigs left on the drive so it has space to move files back and forth.

I use the defrag that comes with Norton Utilities - works a treat. If you're using the Windows defrag, try killing any unnecessary processes running in the background with task manager such as anti virus apps etc...

you also might want to download a filespace wiper (like mutilate) to clean the drive first.

it takes all space and re-writes empty blocks with binary...it removes all 'deleted' files (cause when you delete files, footprints are left on the drive). it will free up some space on the drive and clean the system of any old crap on it. after that, run the derag app and then reboot and run check disc.

usually that will get the system back to normal. also, defrag can terminate unexpectedly if you have any network apps running - things that make constant calls against the system and the harddrive.

check to make sure nothing is utilising the drive while the defrag is running.
