So my little brother just got a Dell running Windows XP Home, I am running Panther. We are connected through ethernet.
What is the easiest way to make a network? Should I use Apple Talk?
I really am a nitwit when it comes to networks..
Thank you.

Panther has built in Windows networking support via SAMBA - in the finder press apple-k and then type type smb://brotherscomputername or else use his ip - and off you go..

we have two PC's and 2 macs here, the macs see the XP boxes and all shared folders, but it is only sometimes it works the other way.

Ok, so I succeeded in building a network between XP and Panther.
The only problem: on XP, I have acces to ALL my files on the Mac and I really don't want that.. does anyone know how to change that?
I think the Public folder on Panther can only be used to share with other Macs and the only option in System Prefs is Windows Sharing...
Thank you.

you can to network XP Home, you just cant add it to a CORP NETWORK DOMAIN, but it can be in a Windows Workgroup.
the thing you need to do is share a folder on the XP box, it will give you a security warning about enabling network shares. then go to your Mac, open a finder window. Click on network, you should have a folder in there called "Workgroup" click that and you should see your XP Box.
on the mac side just open the preferences App, go to sharing, check "personal File Sharing" and Windows Sharing" this way on your XP box you can open Network Neighborhood and see your mac

you can use this too, i used it a coupla years ago, worked like a dream. you can network macs and pc's without it though, just did it a couple weeks ago in an architects office, takes some fiddling however.
make sure you name the workgroup, share folders on the pc's, then you find them on the macs and they show up on your desktop.
