Going to Berlin with my girlfriend for xmas and new years. looking for ideas on places/areas to stay that are economical and cool. no posh and overtly touristed. funky and artistic areas are what we are looking for.
thanks

Check out the Oranienburgstrasse + Rosenthalstrasse + neighbourhood.
Thats the old jewish Ghetto, lots of artists, galleries, indie record stores and DIY fashion shops.

thanks for that. have been recommended that already....looks like we will be hitting that area. any specific hotels in that region worth checking on?
- BXCAR0
no idea.

Oranienburger Straße isn't really the place you want go when you want to avoid lots of tourists. But that area around ahs some nice places, bars and cafes. Friedrichshain is the "hip" district at the moment. As for hotels i dunno, since i live here i have never needed any.

if you have any specific questions don't hestitae to ask me.
would a youth hostel do it for you? or do you want a hotel?
