Is it common practice for a design firm to mark up everything on a project? I know its common practice to mark up printing but what about quotes from photographers or programmers or else?
I hired a photographer (who is also a friend) for an upcoming photographer and my boss wants to mark up his quote to present to the client. Is this common?
It makes me uncomfortable given that this person is a friend...

absolutely, you're acting as an agent in this capacity.

you're also generally marking up for the management etc of that oursource/3rd party....unless you expect the client to manage everything in which case you can just have the client deal direct with the photog (which generally isnt the desired situation...)

Sometimes that can be tricky. I marked up printing services once, and my client found out. Somehow, they thought it was dishonest. So now I no longer markup for 3rd party services, I just raised my hourly rate.

yes it is common--every agency I have worked at has done it.
