to preface this, i appologize to NT for starting another one of these threads, but my intent is not to discuss politics, but rather to discuss the pointlessness of political discussion here. i don't wish to start a debate, nor do i believe i'm opening anyones eyes, but if anything i hope to bring some sort of unity, or more of it to this
community.this was previously posted in the other heated war thread, but since it was deleted i felt compelled to move my rant here:
i quit taking part in these political showdowns a long time ago because i've learned a few things.
firstly, the issues of the world are quite complex and there's never a simple answer, at least not one that we could reasonably hope to conceive here on this 'design' forum. and even if that were our intent, have we not seen how pointless and futile it is to have others see things our way.
this leads me to my second point. if we were on this bold agenda to solve the problems of the world, source, author and debators credibility aside, we can never hope to change ones thinking by making personal attacks on ones closed-mindedness or ones naivety or how one is brainwashed. this also includes broad attacks against people of any particular nation.
the first good thing to do in a debate is establish common ground and find commonality and then sort out differences. but again, we aren't discussing the best font to use in a book or what constitutes a 'rip', we are talking about humanity and the lives of ourselves and others. opinions, cultures, religions all thrown in to make for such a complex array of issues that i don't see how anyone here who can barely debate the usefullness of mac vs pc could even hope to discuss these issues with others with the intent of resolve. i'm sorry, but i just don't see the point. apparently this group is better suited for passing judgement on young naive 19yr olds filled with the motivation and ambition to become what many of us have already succeded at. even i'm guilty.
yay or nay?

"another brick in the wall"
?

the absence of communication is not the answer.
you can't hope to solve the world's problems in this forum but you aren't going to learn a thing if you don't talk about it.
- mitsu0
jamesh, i totally agree. i'm afraid i wasn't clear enough. my point was that few here can even communicate effectively enough to establish any common ground (as it relates to war/foreign affairs, etc)
in general, this type of communication is vital, but it is better suited outside of this forum.. at least from what i've seen.

in fact you just helped me prove my point. whether i didn't express myself correctly or you didn't read my post correctly, our arguments on the topic of war thread legitimacy are already moot. we can't continue if we aren't arguing about the same thing. this is what i see continuously on here.

hmm think this thread will turn into a war debate
- lilbabyleg0
so if we apply your idea on a braoder scale, we should just stop talking about politics period with anyone that we can't find common ground with?
- JazX0
get rid of them in general
- unfittoprint0
politics are part of life are part of politics.
and that's that.

"so if we apply your idea on a braoder scale, we should just stop talking about politics period with anyone that we can't find common ground with? "
no, not at all. i'm pushing for a concerted effort to taking a different approach to reach a resolution. without this, then yes, the debates are arguments that go nowhere. they just build up walls between people of differing opinions.
why do you participate in political discussions? open others eyes? to learn your self, all, none?
- JazX0
I don't mind the politics but the war stuff is beaten like a dead horse here, anyway that's my two cents. :)
- brundlefly0
I agree,
all political discussions will move to friday nights with my friends.
where we solve all the world's problems.
.the brundle think tank.
..can you say sit-com....man I am on the ball like a demon today.
we'll need Gil Gerrard to get started....
- mitsu0
forget it, i retract my comments.

hee hee

mitsu don't let these idiots discourage you. I hear you what you are saying. So... strat by example. Can you find a common ground with me? I will try to find one with you. Go ahead and start.

maybe your continually told that the issues are to complex so you wont play a part in politics. 'Be subserviant and be quiet, stay afraid, we know what we are doing'.
Give me a break, if people like gw bush and arnie can attain positions of such great power something is either very corrupt or very wrong. And by people continually ignoring the issue and having inane conversations about predominantly bad design or brainless mac vs pc conversations then nothing will ever change.
Of course there is no simple answer to political issues but is that a reason to ignore them and talk shite about nothing..
You shouldnt even have consensus in yourself - you should be critical of your own views and seek to educate yourself. dont be afraid of not understanding and dont be offended if someone doesnt agree with you.
as Gandhi said :
"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
