The Casbah and 'Canes are killer... good shows always has people that would be playing up here in LA.
Balboa park has good museums... not as good as NY or LA but you can make days of it.
Hillcrest has a good scene. The most artsy youll get in SD.
Mission Beach is cool for bars.
Bars that are cool... Red Fox room in hillcrest and theres another one thats in that artea that has a good punk jukebox...
SD is cool... fun place.
Aspire to work for Mires. They are the shit there.

certainly not a defining list but a few decent suggestions...
listen: pirates den, bar dynamite, red c lounge (no cover)
eat: sevilla, phils bbq, el agave, prado (lunch on patio on sunny day...)
drink: waterfront (old), yardhouse (many beers), cass st bar & grill (cheap!)
feel free to email if you want any more ideas of stuff to do...

The Casbah is my favorite hangout. Good mix of national and local bands,, good atmosphere.
If you are into electronic music, I usually check out the Brokenbeat crew's (http://brokenbeat.com) show or Dragon Lounge or related events are always good (http://www.mergeevents.com/).
If you just wanna hang out and grab a cheap beer, I recommend Ocean Beach, cool little beachtown.

I really enjoy the merge events.. Project Cathedral, Dragon Lounge, and other shows they put on. I heard the Thievery Corp DJ set was great last month. I helped them out if I can with shows, and consider many of the dancers,, dj's, promoters, etc.. close friends so i may be a bit biased. Athough its a pretty small scene, so everyone knows everyone.
I'm not a huge drum and bass fan, but i've heard from the d and b kids that Dragon Lounge isnt what it used to be. I still have fun when i go.
Canes has had some good shows lately, i caught LTJ Bukem and Goldie in the past month and danced my ass off. Will definitely go to Spiritualized.
My heart is more into the new goa inspired sounds... I usually head to San Fran to get my fix.

Come on people - Death Cab for Cutie is playing THIS sunday at the Scene! Gotta check that out.
If you're in Point Loma grab a bite at Santana's - California Burrito. Ocean Beach - Theo's. Wednesday evenings in Ocean Beach check out the Farmer's Market. Downtown at the contemporary art museum on Broadway check out TNT (Thursday Night Thing) first Thursday of every month - cool art scene. Kensington also has a good art scene.
But always Death Cab.
