Upgrade Digital Camera

I have a Canon ELPH that I've had for at least 3 years. It's a great camera for point and click stuff, but I'm trying to upgrade to something that's gonna give me more control over taking pictures.
You know, mess with the shutter speed and other controls to take interesting shots.
Anything you guys can reccomend, let me know.

I just got the Canon EOS 300D... full on digital SLR, for a great price...
Still expensive though!

I've got the S110. Bought it a while back. The new one that's 4MP is like $450. I was almost just going to do that, but I want some more features.
