I know this has been discussed before, but has anyone figured out a workaround for using photoshop like multiply effects in flash?
I know it has been suggested just to flatten and bring in- but I have an instance of needing independent sybmols to animate ontop of each other and multiply their colors when they interact.
any ideas would be graciously appreciated...

Is this supported in the new flash 2004?

as far as I kow you can't do it, you can transform the colors of an image with setTransform, but not by the color values of another image, like in Director (and others). You can do quite a bit with that though, play around with it.

try exporting your psd file in a few separate layers as .png's... and re-layer them inside of flash...
... the 'multiply' effect will not save out of photoshop.. only the alpha channel will remain intact... so inside of photoshop - work your layers using the opacity until you get the desired effect and then export each layer as a png using the save for web option.
You still won't get your exact desired effect when you bring everything back inside flash...
... anyway - that's the way i'd do what you're trying to achieve. Your final .swf is going to be large though.
happy flashing.

would this not get me the same effect as using alpha channels in flash?
The issue is things get way to light and under saturated.
