I have a router at home with adsl going to me on a mac and someone else using a pc with WinXP.. I have set it up by putting in the IP addresses on the machines manually (192.168.1.x and it works but keeps cutting out after 5-10 mins, it works fine when the PC isn;t connected so I'm just wondering what could be messing things up, any suggestions... it works fine with 2 macs but maybe theres something I'm missing on the PC, could anti virus / messenger / spyware fuck things up??

Sorry if this isn't any help...but I just set up a router this weekend, made by TrendNet, that worked flawlessly (save for my roommate giving me the wrong password for our DSL account and thus keeping the router from logging on correctly.)
It's a nice setup, it has a built in firewall and auto-reconnect in case the server drops for some reason. I was honestly a little surprised that on any computer hooked to it I only had to click IE and I was on the web.
I'm thrilled, and if you're having trouble with your configuration and can still change products, this one I totally reccommend.

I've had the router a while and used it no probs with this setup with 2 macs, I only have trouble when the PC is online so I was wondering what I'm doing wrong but thanks anyway.

we just got us a new router yesterday, it has an admin section where you input the DNS addresses directly into it for the whole network via a webpage which we access by hitting http://192.168.0.1/ and entering a password etc. rather than setting it up on each pc/mac. we are using one mac, one pc and wireless no problem.

yeah I have it setup and working but maybe I should try using the DHCP server rather than assigning IP addresses on the computers themselves... its just wierd that its only when the PC is on that shit happens, I was wondering if theres maybe something on the PC thats confusing the ports??

yeah, we have let the server assign the ip addresses and it works fine. try it
