iPod repair?

Has anyone had any luck with third party companies doing iPod repair? My firewire port needs to be replaced, a fairly simple job, and Apple charges a flat fee of almost $300 for all repairs! I refuse to pay that much and am looking for someone else to do the job. It's out of warranty so I'll try anything reasonable. Thanks in advance for any leads.

I think the fact that you're talking about repairs at all says a little something for the fragility of the ipod, don't you?

" I think the fact that you're talking about repairs at all says a little something for the fragility of the ipod, don't you?"

MP3 players are fragile as a rule. It's a hard drive you carry around in your pocket and throw in a bag. They are all fragile, but the iPod is probably the least fragile (anyone who has held on in their hands can tell this immediately). And creating an inditement of all iPods because of one repair is a little silly. Out of millions of any electronic devices, after a couple years, some will need to be fixed. That's how all devices are, not just the iPod. Apple's tech support of the iPod is what should be brought intro question, not the quality of the device.

By the way, the reason it won't function is because of an old computer that fries firewire devices. It has nothing to do with the iPod itself.
