Hope this isnt a PC vs Mac like thread.
People that use 3d programs. Do you prefer 3dsMax or Maya and why.
Im thinking of taking up 3d work full time. I use Cinema 4d now. I've heard that 3ds and Maya offer way more than 4d. Thanks in advance

I use both.
Maya all the way.

oh yeah...
PC.

While Maya is supposed to give you more control with your model via nurbs, MAX 6 I hear has some great new features. Sputterfish's Brazil renderer for Max does some superb renders. But then again, Maya's has it's renderer that can do some nice stuff as well. It will always come down to what you find intiutive for learning the software... dive in and make your own choice.

I totaly agree. I will form my own opinion, but first i would like to see if anyone has any complants before I actualy buy this software. Thats alot of money.
by the way Mac here.. =P

I use both.
PC. Maya w/ SGI
Probably say go with 3dsmax. Cheaper. Larger user base. Big support community. Used more for games. More free plugins.
Maya's tattered with hype.

XSI

It depends on what you are going to be doing with it.
But if it's high-end animation you're doing and you want a sleek interface that's not a bunch of code slapped together, go with Maya.
Just look at the work put out by the major animation companies and see what software they are using.
and go to http://www.highend3d.com and look at the different galleries.
I work in Max every day and to me it's like walking in knee-high mud.

MAX (and Sputterfish's Brazil renderer, as stated earlier) is all the 3D software you'll need.

What if I want to be modeling, animating, and rendering photorealistic humans? What's the best?

bryce 3d all the way!
[end sarcasm]

XSI has the most refined interface and is best for organic modelling and animation. You can tell the writers were french.

I know the tool doesn't create the artist, but people like Steven Stahlberg have made me wonder about Maya a lot

Maya maya maya.
I'm just getting started with it and am overwhelmed with everything that I've found it can do. I know people that would sacrifice their firstborn in a bar fight to defend Maya.
- chach0
...yeah, kinda like apple fanatics.
Maya IS HYPE!

I like max because it's got good modeling tools, but it's very slow in the viewport past about 20 000 polygons, whatever system I use. I seem to remember softimage being faster but that was 7 years ago...

If I were to start my company or something with 3d in it, I'd try to purchase XSI, I think it's 12,000$. Max would probably be more in my budget but add-up character studio and the hair plug-in, it probably adds-up to about half of that, I guess. Get that instead of a car. :/

Boy I sure would like to take a trip to JUAREZ mexico

XSi no longer costs that much, They have deals where you can get a full package for $1500 or less, same with Max.
I currently work in Max but am trying to pick up XSi slowly. Knowing 2 packages is better than knowing one. I'm starting to go thru what Max 6 can do and I must say it's pretty good. Go here to download a free, fully funtioning version http://www.discreet.com.
Xsi also has a free demo which you can get here http://www.softimage.com
Both come with tutorials and everything. My suggestion try both and you decide.
The only thing I can say about Maya is, I hear the learning curve for it is quite steep.

if you're really serious then maya or xsi, anything else is just waste of time.
I use maya and it does everything you'll ever need oh and the community is growing faster than a speeding bullet. It's already huge.
do yourself a favor and rock a real 3d app
